Poetry Writing Guide

15 Word Poetry:

15 Word Poetry is a form of imaginative writing that uses just 15 words, combining rhythm, sound and imagery to express deep feelings, thoughts and ideas.

Poetry Structure:

There is… within… I feel… I imagine…

  • Words 1-3 = What? - What do you notice, hear or feel?

  • Words 4-6 = Where / How? - Where is it? How does it move, sound or appear?

  • Words 7-10 = Connection - What memory, emotion or association does it bring?

  • Words 11-15 = Meaning - What thought, feeling or story do you want to leave us with?

Poetry Example:

Between these beautiful trees, sunlight dances, memories linger, and Garvey Park holds stories of belonging.

A note for participants:

These are starting points and a guide, not rules. You don’t need to rhyme, write perfectly or tell a complete story. Play with words, sounds, feelings and images. Let your imagination lead.
